Thanks for expressing interest in volunteering with PAWS Atlanta, we wanted to provide these PAWS Atlanta facts, or commonly asked questions about helping out here.
We currently need folks to help socialize/enforce dog training, socialize cats and help with fundraisers/offsite events.
At the orientation you’ll have a 45 minute oral presentation where a history of the organization, verbal overview and short tour of the property will be given.
After that we’ll learn about dog behavior in shelter environments and volunteering with them. We’ll learn how to properly enter a cage, leash a dog, walk a dog and a bit about dog psychology. PAWS Atlanta has 60 dogs, all of whom have different personalities. We realize that you most likely aren’t a vet, nor do you want to be a dog whisperer, however, walking a dog here is different then walking a dog at home.
If you would like to volunteer solely with the cats, offsite events or fundraising, attending that dog training is not necessary. The dog training should last just under 90 minutes and after that you’ll be ready to walk most of the dogs on property.
Of course, there are some fine details, but we’ll go over all of that at the orientation.
Your volunteer time is needed by the adoptable animals and the work will be dirty at times. However, helping a great cat or dog get adopted is something that’s needed on a daily basis and is appreciated. The goal is to get these animals adopted into good homes.
The next orientation will be very soon and advertised on the front page of our web site. Alternately, you are welcome to email or call the contacts below.
When are the orientations?:
The orientations are held every month on the 2nd Sunday at 1:00 and the 4th Saturday of every month at 1:00. In order to ensure that the groups are a size that can be oriented more effectively, reservations are required. Please email, rhoward@pawsatlanta.org, and let us know what date you'd like to attend. The Volunteer Orientationon July 13 is full, there is still space for the orientationon July 26.
Basic information:
The minimum volunteer age is 12.
Those volunteers under the age of 16 need to have a parent or guardian present with them at all times and have transportation off of the property.
-Can you commit to at least one set day of volunteering every four weeks?
Example: you commit to every fourth Saturday morning, but you want to come on an occasional Sunday afternoon, great! This way we know that there is a stable of volunteers to help on that day. It’s our goal to get a steady supply of volunteers helping the animals, instead of the animals alternating between lots of attention and not enough attention.
